As a Taste Enhancer

Humanity has for millennia, especially since basic human civilisation and flourishing began around 3500 B.C in Egypt and India, have always looked to enhance their otherwise stale daily meals. The first forms of seasoning powders in the Indian subcontinent contained basic spices like black pepper, cinnamon, turmeric, and cardamom. In fact, there are evidence that the Persians learnt about these amazing plant-based food essentials from trading with the Indians in 8th Century and even re-planted Indian indigenous Cardamom and Turmeric in the fabled ancient wonder of the world, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon.

Over thousands of years of conditioning with seasoning powders has made most of humanity ever so fond of these indispensable kitchen items. At Modern Store, we have dedicated sections in-store where you can always quiz our expert ground team on the pros and cons of each spice in-store. may be available in several forms: fresh, whole dried, or pre-ground dried. Generally, spices are dried. Spices may be ground into a powder for convenience. A whole dried spice has the longest shelf life, so it can be purchased and stored in larger amounts, making it cheaper on a per-serving basis. A fresh spice, such as ginger, is usually more flavorful than its dried form, but fresh spices are more expensive and have a much shorter shelf life. Some spices are not always available either fresh or whole, for example turmeric, and often must be purchased in ground form. Small seeds, such as fennel and mustard seeds, are often used both whole and in powder form

As a Health Booster

Cinnamon comes from the bark of a tropical evergreen tree and has one of the highest antioxidant values of any spice. The spice has been shown to reduce inflammation, lower blood sugar and blood triglyceride levels, alleviate nausea and increase sensitivity to insulin as an aid in fat burning. It’s also a good source of manganese, iron and calcium. Cinnamon also kills bacteria, so the next time you get a cut, you can actually sprinkle the spice on the wound.

An Indian seasoning mix usually contains cinnamon, mace, peppercorns, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, and cardamon pods. Cumin, one of the major components of the mix, has been shown to boost the activity of digestive enzymes. One study even concluded that an extract of the spice could be used to treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Black pepper, another common ingredient, has also been found to have beneficial effects on our digestive system. On top of that, one study found that eating food with garam masala was associated with faster and more complete digestion time in healthy adults.

While overall diet and exercise remain important factors in any weight loss program, adding spice to your recipes can help the process. Studies show that well seasoned dishes have more of a chance of leaving you satisfied, making you less inclined to overeat. This small change to a persons lifestyle can make major improvements in terms of overall long term physical health. Bottom line: If you’re having trouble processing your food, try spicing it up!
