About Olive Oil

Olive oil comes from olives, the fruit of the olive tree. Olives are a historial crop of the Mediterranean territory. We make olive oil by pressing whole olives. This amazing ingredient has been used for centuries across the globe and can be found in almost every cuisine, even today. On average, the world consumes about 2.25 million tons of olive oil each year. While first being more popular in Italian and other Mediterranean cooking, with awareness about the goodness of olive oil versus other alternatives has helped it spread its wings to all the seven continents.

Containing strong antioxidants and healthy polyphenols, olive oil consumption has been shown to reduce the dangers of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and possibly cancer. Olive oil can even be used as a replacement for most other unhealthy cooking oils and butter. Whether it’s being poured over a salad, as a base for a marinade, or when cooking dosa and other indian dishes, the usage of olive oil are practically limitless.

Is Olive oil good for you?

Olive oil is dense in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, which can help reduce your so called “bad” cholesterol, the LDL cholesterol,  when they substitute saturated fats in your diet. The antioxidants in olive oil may assist in protecting the body from cellular damage that can lead to a range of potentially life threatening health conditions and diseases. Extra virgin olive oil has a bitter flavor, but it contains more antioxidants than other types, as it undergoes the least processing.

It contains many more compounds that are beneficial to your health, including plant sterols and polyphenols which have strong antioxidant properties, and it’s thought that olive oil consumption may have a protective role against development of a variety of cancers.

Studies have also shown that olive oil may have additional beneficial effects on blood pressure and chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

It’s a healthier substitute for butter or palm oil, which are high in saturated fats. But bear in mind that it still contains the same amount of kilojoules (calories) as any other fat – roughly 37kJ (9 calories) per gram. A tablespoon (20mL) of olive oil is about 740kJ (180 calories).

A warning. Olive oil can be bad for you.

What we mean by the above title is, while olive oil is good for your overall health, the benefits shrink when usage is improper. In short, do not over cook or use too high a heat when using Olive Oil, especially the extra virgin version. Research has shown that extra-virgin olive oil has a relatively high smoke point of 376°F (191°C), and is safe to use for most cooking methods, including frying.

However, when people fry in olive oil for a long time, this can lead to degradation of the fats and the production of toxic compounds, including acrolein. Acrolein is a highly reactive, toxic compound that may cause cellular damage when people swallow it. So, as long as you are using olive oil for sautéing or frying and not for prolonged frying methods, it’s perfectly healthy and of course, the most affordable range of olive oil’s are always available at your friendly grocer, Modern Store Indian Grocery.
