Navrathri the most significant festival of the Hindus falls on the lunar month of Ashwin which is either in September or October. The occasion marks the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura, the victory of good over evil. People worship her with full devotion so that Goddess Durga can remove miseries from their lives and fill their lives with happiness, joy, and prosperity.
Rituals of Navrathri
We worship various forms of Goddess Durga on Navratri with full devotion and dedication. On the first three days, we have to worship the Goddess in the form of Kali who is the destroyer of all our impurities. The next three days, we adore Goddess in the form of Lakshmi whom we considered as the giver of inexhaustible wealth. The last three days, we have to worship the Goddess in the form of Saraswati, the giver of knowledge and wisdom.
During the Navrathri festival, people worship all nine avatars of Goddess Durga. Prayers will happen in the morning and evening on all the nine days of the Navratri pooja.
How navrathri is celebrated during 9 day’s?
- On the first day of Navrathri we workship Shailputri. Devotees offer pure ghee on the foot of Shailputri. An offering of pure ghee said to bless the devotee with a life free of diseases and illness.
- On the second day of Navrathri we workship Brahmacharini. Goddess Brahmacharini is a lover of simple food and offerings. Devotees serve sugar and fruits to Goddess Brahmacharini.
- On the third day of Navrathri we workship Chandraghanta. Devotees offer milk, sweets, and kheer to please the Goddess.
- On the fourth day of Navrathri we workship Kushmanda. Devotees worship the Goddess by observing fasts and offering Malpua as Prasad.
- On the fifth day of Navrathri we workship Skandamata. Devotees offer Bananas to the goddess and believed that it keep the devotees in good health.
- On the sixth day of Navrathri we workship Katyayani . Devotees offer honey as prasad to Goddess Katyayani. Her blessings fill their lives with sweetness and help them getting away from troubles.
- On the seventh day of Navrathri we workship Kalratri . Devotees offer jaggery or sweets made with jaggery.
- On the on the eighth day of Navrathri we workship Mahagauri. Devotees offer Goddess coconut and get her blessings.
- On the ninth day of Navrathri we workship Siddhidatri . Devotees observe a fast and offer sesame seeds. This is believed to protect the devotee and his family from problems.
Items for Navrathri Pooja
Picture or idol of Durgaa, a clay pot with fertile soil for sowing seeds, barley seeds, water, kalash, coconut, a piece of red cloth, a bunch of mango leaves, flowers, coin, altar for the idol or picture, red cloth to spread on the altar, sacred thread, raw rice, fragrances, flowers, incense sticks, clay lamp with ghee and wicks, dishes to offer, camphor, matchbox, puja plate, roli for tilak, bell, kutu flour, chana, wheat flour, sugar, ghee, potato and fruits.
Setting of Kolu
People set up steps and place idols on them which is known as Kolu. Puja ceremonies are performed and the Goddess is worshipped with all devotion and dedication. In the evenings, women invite other women of their neighbourhood to their homes to view the Kolu. Aarti is sung, mantras are chanted, prasadham like sundals and sweets are given throughout the Navratri Festival.
