Intuitive Eating is a holistic approach to eating that seeks to promote a healthy relationship with food, body, and self. It was introduced in the 1990s by two registered dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, and has since gained popularity as a way to break free from the cycle of dieting and disordered eating.

The principles of intuitive eating are designed to help individuals learn how to listen to their body’s natural hunger and fullness cues, and make peace with food and their bodies. The ten principles of intuitive eating are as follows:

Reject the Diet Mentality: The first step in intuitive eating is to reject the diet mentality and the idea that weight loss is the ultimate goal. This involves letting go of the idea that certain foods are “good” or “bad,” and embracing all foods as part of a balanced diet.

Honor Your Hunger: Hunger is a biological signal that indicates it’s time to eat. Intuitive eating encourages individuals to listen to their body’s hunger signals and eat when they are hungry, rather than following a set eating schedule or skipping meals.

Make Peace with Food: Intuitive eating encourages individuals to make peace with food by embracing all foods as part of a balanced diet. This involves letting go of the guilt and shame often associated with eating certain foods, and embracing the idea that all foods can be part of a healthy diet.

Challenge the Food Police: The “food police” are the internalized thoughts and beliefs about food and eating that often lead to disordered eating. Intuitive eating encourages individuals to challenge these thoughts and beliefs and focus on finding pleasure in eating.

Respect Your Fullness: Fullness is a signal that indicates you’ve had enough to eat. Intuitive eating encourages individuals to listen to their body’s fullness cues and stop eating when they are satisfied, rather than until they are stuffed.

Discover the Satisfaction Factor: Intuitive eating encourages individuals to find satisfaction in food, rather than just using it for fuel. This involves paying attention to the taste, texture, and experience of eating, and finding pleasure in it.

Honor Your Feelings Without Using Food: Intuitive eating encourages individuals to find alternative ways to deal with emotions, rather than turning to food for comfort. This involves learning how to manage stress, sadness, and other emotions in healthy ways.

Respect Your Body: Intuitive eating encourages individuals to respect their body by embracing its natural shape and size, rather than trying to change it. This involves letting go of the idea that weight loss is the ultimate goal, and embracing the idea that all bodies are beautiful and deserving of respect.

Exercise—Feel the Difference: Intuitive eating encourages individuals to engage in physical activity that feels good and brings them joy, rather than using it as a form of punishment or as a way to burn off calories.

Honor Your Health—Gentle Nutrition: Intuitive eating encourages individuals to make food choices that honor their health, rather than following strict diets or food rules. This involves embracing the idea that all foods can be part of a healthy diet, and finding a balance between nourishing the body and finding pleasure in food.

Getting started with intuitive eating can be a process, and it’s important to approach it with patience and self-compassion. It may take time to develop a healthy relationship with food and your body, but the benefits are well worth the effort.
